Get up!

“When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.”

John 5:6-9 NKJV

How many times have you talked yourself in to staying exactly where you are? Maybe because of a fault of our own, you use the I can’t attitude, or maybe it’s just being lazy, or your not a self motivated person. We use all kinds of reasons for staying exactly where we are. I read the story of Jesus at the pool of Bethesda, the one where He meets the man who has been lame for 38 years and has been beside the pool waiting for someone to put him in. I wonder how many people are just sitting and waiting, waiting mainly on someone else to do something for them. We want someone else to do it for us, we don’t want to take responsibility for ourself. I’m a pretty self motivated person and in my mind I cannot imagine laying that close to the pool and not getting in, I think I would have gone to great extremes to get to the water. When Jesus comes along, he simply asked the man, “Do you want to get well?”. I feel like Jesus is asking many people that today, “Do you want to be well?”. His simple answer to the man’s problem is, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” I believe the same holds true today. Jesus is simply telling you to “Get up!”, to stop waiting for someone else to do it for you. Pick up what has been holding you down and get rid of it. No more waiting on someone to do it for you. It’s time you take the initiative and get up. It’s time to obey what Jesus has been instructing you to do, no more staying exactly where you have been for most of your life.
